When planning family photographs, one of the first decisions is whether to book a full session or a mini session. Both can result in beautiful images, but the experiences are designed for different families and different goals.
As a Greensboro family photographer and a mom of four, I know there is not one option that works best for everyone. Here is how to decide which session is the better fit for your family.

You want a quick update of your family.
Mini sessions are perfect when you need an updated family portrait, photographs for your holiday card or a few new favorites for frames and gifts.
Your children generally warm up quickly.
With a 15-minute session, we begin photographing almost immediately. Minis tend to work best for children who are comfortable in front of the camera and can settle into a new environment fairly quickly.
You are comfortable with a predetermined date and location.
Mini sessions are offered on select dates at locations I have chosen for their beautiful light and scenery. They are a great option if you love the setting and have some flexibility with your schedule.
You are happy with a smaller variety.
Because our time is limited, we focus on the most important combinations, including the entire family, the children together and a few individual portraits when time allows.
You want a more relaxed pace.
A full session gives children time to explore, warm up and be themselves. We can pause for snacks, reset when someone needs a break and follow your children’s energy without watching the clock.
Your child needs extra time or support.
If your child is shy, slow to warm up, highly energetic or has sensory needs, a full session gives us the flexibility to make the experience comfortable for them.
You want more variety.
Full sessions allow time for the entire family, individual children, siblings, each parent with the children and portraits of the parents together. We can also include more movement, play and natural interaction.
You want to choose the date and location.
With a full session, we select a date and setting that fit your family’s schedule, style and vision rather than choosing from predetermined event dates.
You are hoping to create artwork for your home.
If you are dreaming of a framed family portrait or an album that tells more of your family’s story, the larger variety of a full gallery gives you more options. I will also help you consider sizing, framing and artwork that fits naturally into your home.

Neither option is better. It simply depends on what your family needs this year.
If you know your family would benefit from more time, flexibility and variety, choose the full session. If your family photographs regularly and you just need a beautiful seasonal update, a mini session may be exactly right.
Mini sessions are offered on only a few select dates throughout the year, while full family sessions provide greater flexibility and are available year-round.

As a mom to four little ones, I know firsthand how full this season of motherhood can feel — the mental load, the exhaustion, and the pressure to hold everything together. I remember being newly postpartum and how hard it felt just to get dressed for newborn photos, let alone coordinate outfits and feel present in the moment.
With a thoughtfully guided approach, I’ve created a photography experience that allows mothers to slow down and simply be — present, connected, and supported. Whether we’re photographing in your home or outdoors, my focus is always on natural connection and the quiet moments that reflect this season honestly, and are meant to be enjoyed long after.
